RIVERS

Wales is not internationally famous for the size and length of its rivers, but, as in any civilised nation, rivers are an important feature of the land, and usually give clues to the development of ancient cultures.

The three longest rivers sourced in Wales pass through England before they reach the sea. One other (the Monnow), is mainly in England, but forms part of the border with Wales. The following list gives these and a further 20 of the longest rivers in Wales. In each case the length is given in statute miles.

The map shows the approximate location of some of the rivers. In hilly areas such as Wales, rivers do an awful lot of wriggling about, so in the available resolution, only a general indication is feasible. Please note that while the south east coast of Wales is on the Severn Estuary, the bulk of the river Severn is outside the area of the map. Note also that some rivers, such as the Ithon and Monnow are tributaries of other rivers, so are identified inland, where in most cases the rivers are identified at the coast.

By the way - have you ever wondered why Welshmen are called "Taffy"? The river running up through Cardiff might have something to do with it!
