WALES WIDE WEB
CENTRES OF
POPULATION

The population of Wales is very unevenly dispersed. The mountainous region in mid-Wales is sparsely populated, while the south coast is fairly densely populated. Certainly most of the industrial activity takes place in the Newport - Cardiff - Swansea belt, with some in the area of Wrexham in the north. The following is a list of the main centres with the population estimated in thousands as at the 1991 census. These figures may be a useful guide, but with the demise of the coal and steel industries, and the rise of modern industrial communities, there has been some adjustment since 1991.

Care must be taken not to confuse population with cultural importance. There are a number of towns, and even villages, which feature highly in the cultural heritage of Wales, and may be places of interest for many reasons, but which do not appear on this list at all.
